Please join us if you plan to conduct research studies with human participants, including (but not limited to) surveys, interviews, focus groups, classroom or educational research, language studies, psychological tests, kinesiology or exercise studies, or analysis of existing individually identifiable datasets. Masters theses and dissertations with human subjects require IRB review, too!

Please select the session(s) you will attend: Session 1: 9:00AM - 10:15AM. Institutional Review Board (IRB) 101 (includes breakfast). Updated! Topics for this introductory session include ethics, history, and federal regulations related to the conduct of research involving human subjects. Participation in this session will qualify as credit/completion of UTA's IRB Human Subject Protection (HSP) Online Training. Session 2: 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM. Preparing an IRB Protocol. Updated! This seminar provides a walkthrough of the IRB protocol preparation and submission process, and provides examples for accurately completing study-related documents in order to receive an expeditious IRB approval. Additionally, IRB Staff will discuss the ethical criteria for approval which must be met before the IRB can approve a protocol. Session 3: 12:00PM - 1:30PM. "In the Shoes" of the IRB (includes lunch). Participants will have the opportunity to experience what it is like from an IRB member's perspective to review a full-board protocol classified as greater than minimal risk. IRB Staff will provide case studies for a great in-depth, interactive discussion. Session 4: 1:45PM - 2:45PM. Special Considerations in Biomedical and Health Research. NEW! With UTA's focus on health and the human condition, it has become increasingly important that UTA researchers must understand the special considerations involved when conducting studies in these areas. Researchers from Nursing, Kinesiology, Bioengineering, and even clinical areas of Psychology and Social Work will benefit from this discussion with topics including what kinds of data are HIPAA-protected; when is research regulated by the FDA; what is Good Clinical Practice (GCP); what are the differences between QA/QI, Evidence Based Practice, Program Evaluation, and Research projects; and more. Session 5: 2:55PM - 3:25PM. The Revised Common Rule - What's Coming in January? HOT TOPIC! Regulatory Services will provide a brief walkthrough of the changes to the federal regulations governing federally-funded human subjects research which are set to take effect in January 2019. Changes include additions to the Informed Consent; additional exemption categories; and the elimination of the requirement for continuing reviews on Expedited-level research. Session 6: 3:30PM - 4:15PM. New UTA IRB Changes: Achieving Better Research Ethics & Compliance through Flexibility. HOT TOPIC!
